Ross McGill - The Man Behind @TeacherToolkit

As a recruitment company that specialises in leadership, we have recently made a push to celebrate successful school leaders across the country. From the UK’s first disabled headteacher to the headteacher who developed the No Outsiders Campaign, we now wanted to shed some light on the social media guru Ross McGill.

Ross McGill has been working in some of London’s most challenging schools for over 30 years and with 20 years of leadership experience, it’s no wonder his blog @Teachertoolkit has been so well-received worldwide.

Ross began blogging in 2000 and launched the Teachertoolkit website in 2007 as a way of sharing teaching resources and classroom ideas with the wider teaching community. Since, he has been nominated as one of the “500 most influential people in Britain” by The Sunday Times in 2015, one of the 50 most influential people in English Education by Education Business and his blog has been awarded ‘Best UK Education Blog’ and ‘Best Use of Social Media’ by multiple organisations.

Due to the success of his blog, Bloomsbury Publishing asked him to write his first book 100 Ideas - Outstanding Lessons and after having his book enter the top 30 of all books on Amazon he went on to write four more books, selling over 70,000 worldwide.

After such a successful career most would believe that Ross would be content but he felt as though he wanted to learn more. This prompted him to start his doctorate in September 2018 at Cambridge University, researching ‘How Twitter provides teachers with autonomy and how this influences Education policy’, proving that no matter what point someone is at in their career it is never too late to pursue further education.

Ross’ lifetime commitment to education is inspirational, from working as a class teacher himself to mentoring and helping the new generation of school staff, he has dedicated himself to bettering education in the UK as a whole and is someone we should all look to for motivation.
