 How to be a good role model for your staff & students

As a leader within your school, you play a big part in being the role model for your staff and students. You are the face of your school and in a position of power so, you need to be the role model for all those within it.

Hopefully, if you've made it this far, you know what being a good role model takes. But there's nothing wrong with getting a little refresher on the basics. 

Showing respect

As the saying goes, 'treat people how you want to be treated'. You can't expect your students and staff to show you respect if you don't show them respect. When your students see those around them showing respect to one another, they will reciprocate that behaviour. 

Be a guide for them

The students and staff at your school look up to you when they struggle or need some guidance; they need to be sure that you're there for them. 

Show your support to your teachers by ensuring that you listen to their concerns and offering them support with their decision-making process. Mentor those looking to move up the ranks and look out for signs that the teachers or students under your care may be struggling so you can put measures in place to help them. 

Be humble

There is nothing that teaches students mature behaviour like showing it to them. A humble leader is one that is always looking for ways for others to succeed and will seek to find ways to recognise the hard work of both their teaching and non-teaching staff. By acting in this manner you encourage others to do the same and therefore create a positive culture within your school or academy trust. 

Positive attitude 

Having a positive mindset and attitude will ensure your students and staff also have a positive attitude towards learning and teaching. 

Of course, things do not always go as planned. However, your outlook on them as a leader will determine how others view the situation too. It doesn't mean that you need to bury your head in the sand but rather that you accept the challenge in front of you and address it in the best way possible. 

While this isn't an extensive list, hopefully, it has helped to give you some assurance that you are doing the right thing and modelling the right behaviour. If not, now is your time to do something about it and bring about positive change in your school.
